Empowering Students: StudyStash's AI-Powered Education Platform

Empowering Students: StudyStash's AI-Powered Education Platform

StudyStash delivers an AI-powered web-app which promises to empower students through their GCSE’S, A-Levels and at University. The business is founded by Computer Science finalists Ben Ward and Jonathan Graham.

Ben: StudyStash is the stress free, fun way to revise.
We offer a better way to prepare for exams, transforming traditional education into a personalised experience through a user-friendly and seamless user interface across all devices.

At university, I'm part of the outreach team and I mentor mathematics, physics, biology and work with disadvantaged/under-achieving students at Harborne Academy.

I quickly realised the majority of students struggled with motivation, organisation and having the right materials/tools to succeed at school. Being from a technical background studying Computer Science Jonathan and I thought of tools we could build that would be a unified solution to this major learning deficit left after Covid-19.

StudyStash was created by Jonathan and Ben whilst studying at University. We first came across the B-Enterprising team as they offered funding for their 'Ideas Fund'. This immediately caught our attention and from then on, Bob and Kerry have been influential in our success. They've supported us financially, with advice and so much more.

Running your own business comes with some incredible aspects too. My personal favourite is running and having the responsibility of looking after a team of 10. It's great to see everyone working together towards a common goal; to empower students to do well in their exams.

The biggest takeaway from creating StudyStash has been that you shouldn't worry about your age. Being young means people often try to take advantage and they don't realise your full potential.

At University, I'm part of the outreach team and I mentor mathematics, physics, biology and work with disadvantaged/under-achieving students at Harborne Academy. To date, we've generated a huge amount of market interest from Universities, Schools, Trusts, Professional Service Firms, ACA examinations and Charities. We've also built a fully functional web-app, hired 8 interns and had hundreds of sign-ups.

Furthering that, Nicola Gittins and Ana Madan from B-Enterprising have given us a lot of their time and helped us get on the UoB Elevate Incubator program where we won a scholarship for StudyStash.

StudyStash - Overview from StudyStash on Vimeo.

Jonathan and I both became friends at UoB through Comp. Sci and are living together in the Jewellery Quarter. One of the worst things is that sometimes we argue about how things should work, but that's also how we thrive. We're not afraid of saying what we think and that leads to the best solution.

Another great feeling is when we get a lot of market interest and people willing to help our journey without expecting anything in return.

My advice for anyone thinking of starting up?
Just jump! What's the worst that's going to happen. Releasing, setting deadlines and just doing it is the best advice we can give to new start-ups.

Often younger entrepreneurs have the most motivation and can have the agility of a new startup. They're also technically able to produce products and services which are so much stronger than full teams and people who tell you that you can't do it!

StudyStash was first created only 4 months ago. Since then, we're in the process of securing 4 large clients ranging from Universities, Charities, Trusts and Schools. We've had market interest from all kinds of industries and have brought 8 other people on the journey with us.

Hitting 60,000+ social media impressions, having a growing user base and growing a community, StudyStash should be a perfect example of what two motivated students can achieve in a short period of time. Please reach out to us if you would like to hear our journey in person or would like to join our growing team.

If you are looking to get help for your own idea, please visit the B-Enterprising website for more information.

Fusion of Traditions: House of Gillani's Luxury Thobes Blend Eastern Craftsmanship and Western Tailoring

Fusion of Traditions: House of Gillani's Luxury Thobes Blend Eastern Craftsmanship and Western Tailoring

Philosophy, Politics and Economics undergraduate Mr. Syed Gillani is the founder of clothing business House of Gillani.

This luxury clothing brand specializes in creating bespoke thobes, drawing inspiration from the renowned tailoring traditions of Savile Row. The company offers a diverse range of thobes, including ready-to-order options and custom-made designs tailored specifically to customers' measurements and preferences.

A thobe is a long, loose-fitting robe commonly worn in Arab countries, crafted from lightweight fabrics, and often adorned with traditional embroidery or stitching.

Syed:
At House of Gillani, we take pride in seamlessly blending the expertise of Eastern cloth weaving with Western sartorial tailoring techniques. Our thobes are meticulously crafted using the finest quality fabrics sourced from the East, while incorporating the precision and attention to detail synonymous with the tailoring practices of Savile Row.

Whether you choose a ready-to-order thobe or opt for our bespoke tailoring service, you can expect the utmost in craftsmanship, quality, and style. Our team of skilled artisans and tailors ensures that each thobe is made to the highest standards, paying careful attention to every stitch and detail. House of Gillani strives to create thobes that exude luxury and elegance while reflecting the individuality and personal style of our discerning clientele.

The idea for House of Gillani originated when I came across a gap in the market for bespoke tailoring in traditional Eastern clothing while working in the space of luxury design.

Utilising my background in sartorial tailoring from one of the oldest suiting houses in the world, I was inspired to merge the principles of British tailoring with the creation of luxury thobes.

I envisioned a house that would combine the craftsmanship and attention to detail seen in classic British suiting with fabrics from the east. Motivated by this vision, I established the House of Gillani. The founding of the company in August 2022 marked the beginning of our journey to offer exquisite, personalized unique thobes to our clientele.

House of Gillani received invaluable support from the B-Enterprising team during our start-up journey. The start-up fund award provided financial assistance that helped us cover the initial costs of setting up our business. This support played a crucial role in establishing a solid foundation for House of Gillani, enabling us to invest in essential resources, materials, and equipment.

Furthermore, the guidance and information provided by the B-Enterprising team have been instrumental in shaping the direction of our business for the future.

Their expertise and insights helped us navigate the complexities of the industry and make informed decisions regarding our strategies, market positioning, and growth plans. Their advice and mentorship provided us with valuable perspectives and helped us refine our business plans going forward.

Best aspects of starting a business:

Creative fulfilment:
Being able to bring your unique vision to life and create something that reflects your passion is incredibly fulfilling.

Independence and control: As a business owner, you have the freedom to make decisions and shape the direction of your company, allowing you to implement your ideas and strategies without external limitations. This autonomy allows you to implement your ideas and strategies without external limitations.

Customer satisfaction: Providing customers with bespoke thobes tailored to their preferences and measurements can result in a high level of customer satisfaction. Seeing your customers delighted with their personalized garments is incredibly rewarding.

Greatest challenges running a business:

Operational challenges: Running a business involves managing various operational aspects, such as supply chain, production, and logistics. Balancing these elements can be demanding and requires meticulous attention to detail.

Financial uncertainty:
Providing customers with bespoke thobes tailored to their preferences and measurements can result in a high level of customer satisfaction. Seeing your customers delighted with their personalized garments is incredibly rewarding.

Work-life balance: As a business owner, the line between work and personal life can become blurred. The dedication and commitment required to establish and grow a successful business often mean long hours and limited leisure time.

One thing that I wish I knew before starting House of Gillani is the specific challenges and intricacies involved in harmonizing Eastern traditions with Western sartorial sensibilities. While I had a background in sartorial tailoring and recognized the market gap, the process of effectively combining these two distinct traditions presented unforeseen obstacles.

Having an existing understanding of the complexities in sourcing fabrics and adapting them to Western tailoring techniques and ensuring a seamless integration of these elements could have provided valuable insights and allowed for more strategic planning from the outset. However, over time we have gained invaluable experience and expertise, refined our processes and ensuring the highest level of craftsmanship and customer satisfaction.

However, over time we have gained invaluable experience and expertise, refined our processes and ensuring the highest level of craftsmanship and customer satisfaction.

The biggest takeaway from our experience at House of Gillani has been the importance of combining tradition with innovation. By merging Eastern cloth expertise with Western sartorial traditions, we have created a unique offering that appeals to our discerning clientele.

This experience has taught us that honouring tradition while embracing innovation is a powerful approach to business. It allows us to preserve the rich heritage while infusing it with a new found precision and sophistication. This balance has been key to our success and has set us apart in the luxury thobe market.

Furthermore, our experience has reinforced the significance of customer-centricity. By offering bespoke tailoring and personalized services, we have created a strong connection with our customers and deliver garments that truly reflect their individuality and style. Understanding and meeting the needs and desires of our customers has been instrumental in building brand loyalty and driving our growth.

Therefore, our biggest takeaway from the House of Gillani's experience is the power of merging tradition with innovation and prioritizing customer satisfaction. By staying true to our roots while embracing modernity, we have been able to establish ourselves as a reputable and distinctive luxury clothing brand.

We have invested significant time and effort in perfecting our craft, sourcing the finest fabrics, and assembling a team of skilled artisans and tailors who share our commitment to quality and excellence. Since our inception, we have grown steadily, gaining recognition for our unique approach and luxurious thobes.

Our commitment to personalized service and attention to detail has garnered a loyal customer base that appreciates the bespoke experience and the distinctive garments we create.

To ensure the highest level of customer satisfaction, we have expanded our offerings beyond ready-to-order thobes to include our bespoke tailoring service.

This allows customers to have thobes tailored specifically to their measurements and preferences, ensuring a perfect fit and a truly personalized garment.

Moreover, we have established strong relationships with our fabric suppliers, both in the East and the West, to maintain a steady supply of premium materials. This enables us to consistently deliver thobes of exceptional quality, reflecting the core values of our company.

Looking forward, our goal is to continue pushing boundaries and innovating within the realm of luxury thobes. We aspire to expand our reach, both locally and globally, and introduce our unique blend of tradition and modernity to a wider audience.

We are proud of our journey and the progress we have made so far, but we remain committed to growth and improvement. House of Gillani is dedicated to providing our customers with exquisite, personalized thobes that embody the intersection of Eastern craftsmanship and Western tailoring, ensuring that each garment is a work of art, made with passion and meticulous attention to detail.

The Anime-Inspired Start-up: Weeb Express Takes on Hyper Japan London

The Anime-Inspired Start-up: Weeb Express Takes on Hyper Japan London

Weeb Express is an anime merchandise business, founded in July 2021 by Materials Science Graduate, Heidi Leung. On 21 - 23 July, Weeb Express attended Hyper Japan London - the largest Japanese culture festival in the UK, centred around Japanese cuisine and pop culture such as gaming, anime, manga, music and more!
With the help from the UoB Elevate Start-Up programme, Weeb Express was able to employ two talented University of Birmingham student interns, Ash and Fiona, to support the team with Sales and Marketing during the event.
Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the staff team and the invaluable support from the student interns, Weeb Express achieved a remarkable result at Hyper Japan.
Over the course of three days, Weeb Express secured more than 300 sales, resulting in an impressive total revenue of £3600. Their social media reached more than 1000 target audiences and gained 20% more followers.

Heidi: Hyper Japan was our very first convention in London and our third convention ever since we started two years ago. I am so glad that everything turned out alright in the end. Despite the train/tube strikes affecting sales, we still managed to make a small profit!  London has proven to be a suitable place for Weeb Express, and we're eager to attend more London conventions in the future.

Weeb Express is more than just making money. It's about bringing happiness to anime fans in this country, including myself! I love anime, and it's fulfilling to work for what I enjoy.

Running a convention stall like this enables me to meet wonderful, like-minded anime fans in this country.

I'm also grateful that the Elevate Programme gave me the opportunity to employ Ash and Fiona as student interns. They have been a great help! It was my first time undertaking the hiring responsibilities, including crafting job descriptions, conducting interviews, and maaging the interns. I've learned a lot from it, and I'll use those lessons to make things even better next time!

Ash: During my internship with Weeb Express, I found it interesting to witness and be a part of two distinct aspects to retail: an online aspect, in which I spent time discussing and strategising potential social media campaigns in order to improve customer retention, as well as a physical aspect, in which we sold merchandise at Hyper Japan, a massive festival in celebration of Japanese culture.

I learned the importance of building a loyal customer base- the more people following us means the more people that will have a look at buying from our store.

To this end, together with the rest of the Weeb Express team, we planned and executed said strategies such as collaborating with university societies and anime groups that would be interested in buying from us. They get a discount, we get advertising, a win-win situation.

Above: an example of a promotional voucher we created as part of a collaboration with anime societies

Speaking of which, next came Hyper Japan itself. Weeb Express primarily focuses on selling anime merchandise, and at Hyper Japan we had plenty of customers interested in our stand. The one big difference between regular retail opportunities, and working at a stall at a festival, was the level of presentation that needed to go into the stall. I found that our Ichiban Kuji was a big draw to people at the festival, as it was unique and made customers curious to have a try at our lucky draw.

Fiona: As part of my internship with Weeb Express, I was responsible for the company’s social media advertisement. At first, I wasn’t sure what kind of expectations I should have nor how to go about designing the marketing posts, but was provided with apt assistance such as previous examples and suggestions of design tools such as Canva.

I quickly grew accustomed to utilising graphic design techniques to ensure Weeb Express’ posts looked as professional as possible, and ensured that all captions were formatted uniformly and correctly. I learnt how to track product stock, practised my translation skills and learnt more about how the business generated profit, all while under a relaxed work environment.

The part I enjoyed the most was definitely being able to work at the Hyper Japan convention in-person; it was a remarkable opportunity which I will remember for years to come. It is the largest exhibition celebrating Japanese culture to be held in the UK, hosting thousands of visitors in London!

I enjoyed interacting with various customers and introducing to them our Ichiban Kuji lucky draw as a sales assistant. Selling merchandise was satisfying and rewarding. I was even given the opportunity to browse the convention leisurely during my breaks, which was definitely a big bonus.

All in all, I found working for Weeb Express and learning about its business practices a pleasant and recommendable experience, especially as I have of common interests with Heidi, the owner.

Game On! Exploring the fun world of Board Game start-up Hex Mad

Game On! Exploring the fun world of Board Game start-up Hex Mad

Hex Mad is a board/card game publisher based in Birmingham, aiming to make fun and rewarding games that don't take ages to set up and play.

The start-up is founded by Applied Linguistics graduate Ian James and based at the university's incubator UoB Elevate in Centenary Square. Hex Mad value sustainability and inclusivity, and plan to give 10% of their profits to charity.

Ian: Our first game, Curse Words, is a word making and guessing game for adults, and will be coming to Kickstarter soon. It’s been described as Cards Against Humanity meets Scrabble, but more creative than the former and quicker, funnier, more party-ish than the latter. And you get to shout rude words at your friends!

When COVID-19 hit I was living in China, teaching English at a university in a ‘small’ coastal city of 6 million people. I was alone and the lockdown rules on campus were very strict, meaning I went close to 6 months with little to no social contact. This experience taught me two things:

1. Always grow your hair and/or beard long during a global pandemic. It might be the best chance you’ll ever have to see if you can pull off Jesus-chic.

2. Even if you’re a massive introvert like me, spending time with people is essential for one’s mental health, I went full-on Cast Away and made friends with a shield bug!

Whether it’s board games, Dungeons and Dragons or Nintendo, games have long been a centre-point for my social life, and I think this is true for many. They help bring people together and connect over a shared experience.

I’ve always struggled with social anxiety to varying degrees, but I’ve found that when I’m engrossed in a game any anxiety I’m feeling fades.

So, stuck in a small flat with only Miguel the shield bug for company, I started designing games that I hoped would capture those social gaming good-feels I was craving.

I eventually came back to the UK to do a Masters in Applied Linguistics at the University of Birmingham, during which I had the idea for Curse Words.

I used corpus analysis techniques learned during my MA to help determine the game’s letter distribution and point values based on letter frequencies (while I should’ve been doing my dissertation, naturally).

Then, when I heard about the support the university offers for start-ups, I decided it was time to give releasing games a shot. I knew it would be difficult and might not work out, but if I could bring a bit of humour, anxiety-relief and togetherness into a few people’s lives I felt it’d be well worth it.

The university helped me a great deal.
First off, I received £500 of funding thanks to the B-Enterprising Startup Fund, which went a long way towards getting Hex Mad off the ground and even more importantly, gave me the self-belief (and belief in my idea) that I needed to take the plunge.

Secondly, we were lucky enough to get a place at UoB Elevate, the university's start-up incubator run by the fantastic B-Enterprising team. This has given us access to learning and guidance from business experts, mutual support from the other founders on the programme, and a swanky office space at the Exchange building in central Birmingham, all of which have been invaluable.

Thirdly, we’ve been able to recruit two interns from the B-Experienced programme, as well as two MSc Marketing students from the Marketing Project, to advise on how to better get the game out there, something I’m not great at!

We recently exhibited at UKGE, the UK’s biggest board games convention (2-4 June at the NEC) and the interns’ help here was vital.

The best part about starting your own idea I would say is the freedom, scope for creativity, the challenge and sense of achievement, learning loads of new things, and meeting some lovely people you wouldn’t otherwise meet.

The more challenging part is that you are always busy and never able to fully switch off, as there’s always more you could and should be doing. Having spoken to a few people who’d already set up board games companies, this is something I already knew, but it really is a lot of work.

There’s so much to do behind the scenes, all of which seems to take up more time than you’d expect, and often you don’t have much to show for it. This is not to put anyone off – it can also be extremely rewarding – it’s just to say don’t do it unless you’re really passionate about the organisation you’re creating.

Your biggest takeaway from your experience?

Go for it! Apply for that start-up support, go to that event, do that scary thing. If you can bear to, give it a try. You might succeed, you might fail, but you’ll definitely come out wiser/more experienced, and you might make a few friends along the way.

I’d love to hear from any tabletop games lovers at UoB! We run occasional board games meetups and may have future internship opportunities available. And of course we’d appreciate any support - look out for our Kickstarter campaign and Instagram page.

Helping SME's to find Net Zero | The Postgraduate Enterprise Summer School with HSBC

Helping SME's to find Net Zero | The Postgraduate Enterprise Summer School with HSBC

The Postgraduate Enterprise Summer School (PESS2023) took place at the University of Birmingham last week, offering postgraduate students a valuable platform for gaining enterprise skills, consultancy experience, and exploring the commercialisation of research ideas.

The programme included Postgraduates from the University of Birmingham and Warwick University working through a sustainability challenge set by employer partner HSBC.

The participants with diverse academic disciplines, were introduced to each other on the first day and organised into teams. Their main objective throughout the week was to devise a solution that would help HSBC in guiding 2 million SMEs toward a net-zero future. The program featured training workshops focusing on ideation, validation, and presentation skills.

Challenge: With Climate Change and Net Zero in mind. What steps should HSBC take to drive 2 million SME's to begin their transition to a net zero future?

The programme is facilitated by University Graduate School and Careers Network.

This year, the programme operated from three separate locations across Birmingham. The first day was held at HSBC's Birmingham headquarters in Centenary Square, providing an ideal backdrop for scene-setting.

The following days were campus based with further training and guest sessions from John Cooke, Holly Prescott and Miruna Chipara. Team time sessions provided the opportunity to develop ideas, find solutions and create a final pitch.

On Wednesday, the programme briefly moved from campus to The Exchange and featured a networking lunch with advice and guidance available to participants from the HSBC Senior Leadership Team.

Presentations took place on the final day at HSBC (Centenary Square) as six teams battled it out in a pitch competition format. The judging panel included Rebecca Picton (HSBC) Daniel Jones (HSBC), Professor Duncan Shephard (UoB Graduate School) and Jayne Sharples (UoB Careers Network).

Team 6 (Integre) were eventual winners in a closely fought contest.

We would like to thank everyone who made the programme possible, especially staff at HSBC who gave up their time and for their hospitality during the first

Koazy Home, a furniture start-up aims to create a relaxed atmosphere for its customers

Koazy Home, a furniture start-up aims to create a relaxed atmosphere for its customers

KOAZY Home is a homegrown creative brand based in the UK, driven by the inspiration of a relaxed and effortless lifestyle.

The business operates from the university's start-up incubator (UoB Elevate) and is founded by University of Birmingham graduate Guangyu Shi and Ruixin Tong.

Guangyu: Upon arriving at Birmingham International Airport in 2021, I faced the challenge of finding suitable accommodation. Despite exhaustion from the journey and multiple moves, I had to quickly acquire bedding and kitchen supplies. It took time to gather the necessary items, but their quality fell short.

These experiences, along with interactions with new international students, inspired the creation of 'KOAZY Home'. Our goal is to ensure that the first night of international students arriving in the UK is no longer cold by enjoying a one-stop service from KOAZY. Customers can pre-order our bedding products and choose their arrival time in the UK.

We deliver the bedding to their designated address at the specified time, catering to their specific needs with our acceptable price in high quality products.

This is how we started with the initial idea to fulfill the real pain points for this certain group.

Going forward, another important aspect is product design. Based on our market research, we have observed a lack of creativity in many home-related products, particularly in the balance between comfort, aesthetics, playfulness, and their connection to technology. There is ample room for further exploration in these areas.

In our Chinese office, we have a dedicated team of professional product designers, and we are actively seeking exceptional designers worldwide to expand our product line and meet the diverse consumer demands.

Our mission is to enable all life enthusiasts to reconnect with their authentic selves and indulge in a life of comfort and serenity, through our range of products and services. With Koazy Home, you can embrace the true essence of living and experience a sense of inner peace and physical rejuvenation. Join us on this journey of enjoying life to the fullest.

Furthermore, regarding the production of bedding products, we are actively
engaging with local suppliers in the UK to establish partnerships. Our goal is to establish the KOAZY brand, integrate British and Chinese supply chain resources, and make significant progress in this area by 2025. This will be a key focus of our efforts in the coming years.

Starting a business in the UK as a foreigner has been a significant challenge for me and our team. Language barriers, unfamiliarity with the local market, and navigating business practices and policies have posed obstacles.

However, being part of the incubator has provided invaluable support. Through entrepreneurship-related activities, we've gained insights into the real market environment and valuable resources.

The inclusive and friendly atmosphere nurtured by the B-Enterprising team has fostered connections with fellow entrepreneurs, allowing us to exchange experiences and feel a strong sense of belonging. Additionally, we've acquired professional knowledge such as taxation, law, intellectual property, and data securities, and connected with alumni, potential investors, and interns through various sessions and business networking activities.

What are the best aspects of running a business?
The greatest part is transforming a hopeful vision into reality. It's like building with LEGO, taking something from 0 to 1 and beyond. This journey is both pride-worthy and immensely valuable. Looking back on this experience in the future, regardless of its outcome, will be a moment worth celebrating and commending oneself for.

What are the greatest challenges?
Risk management. All business activities are closely tied to risk, and any decision-making mistakes can result in missed market opportunities, not to mention the loss of time and money.

This places higher demands on entrepreneurs. Effectively gathering information, efficiently extracting the most valuable insights from it, and using that information to make informed decisions become crucial skills

Name one thing you wish you knew before you started?
My only regret is not starting my own business earlier; however, since I have begun now, I believe the best mindset is to keep moving forward. Every day, I strive to make progress and become a better version of myself compared to yesterday.

What's your biggest takeaway?
1)Be proactive and maintain a proactive mindset in all circumstances. Take the initiative to approach people you want to connect with, actively seek knowledge you want to learn, and proactively build your life and career. By staying proactive, becoming the master of own life.

2)Adopt a "just do it" attitude, without overthinking or engaging in meaningless interactions. Identify what you want to achieve, plan it step by step, and follow your established roadmap. As long as you take action, you will always be on the path towards your goals.

Incubator Pitch Competition: Elevate your Startup

Incubator Pitch Competition: Elevate your Startup

On Monday 5 June, the University of Birmingham hosted an exciting pitch competition for founders as part of the UoB Elevate programme.

This Dragon's Den-style event brought together ten passionate entrepreneurs who competed for prizes in two distinct categories: 'My First Pitch' and 'Improve My Pitch'.

The competition aimed to provide a supportive platform where founders could gain valuable insights from successful entrepreneurs and experts, while refining their pitching skills. Let's delve into the details of this remarkable event.

The UoB Elevate start-up incubator at The Exchange, which is home to 38 businesses, is a dedicated programme for start-up founders. The incubator opened its doors in 2021, and this pitch event was specifically designed for the most recent cohort who began their entrepreneurial journey in September 2022.

The 'My First Pitch' category provided an ideal opportunity for early-stage start-up founders to present their ideas for the first time. This category focused on building confidence, exposure, and real-time feedback. The panel of experienced judges, with their extensive entrepreneurial backgrounds, provided valuable insights, suggestions, and reflections to help participants identify areas of improvement.

The founders were able to gain confidence and refine their pitches in a safe and friendly environment. This category truly showcased the inclusive nature of the event, giving early-stage founders a chance to take part and receive expert guidance.

The 'Improve My Pitch' category was tailored for founders who had already pitched their ideas but were looking to enhance their presentation skills.
Participants in this category had the opportunity to receive constructive feedback from the judges, enabling them to refine their pitches and effectively communicate their business concepts.
This category catered to more experienced entrepreneurs who were seeking further refinement and polish in their pitching abilities. It demonstrated that the UoB Elevate programme is not only focused on nurturing early-stage founders but also committed to supporting founders at various stages of their entrepreneurial journey.
The event was introduced by Ana Madan, a member of the B-Enterprising Team.

The panel of judges consisted of four highly accomplished individuals, each bringing their diverse skills and extensive experience to the table. Two of the judges are alumni from the University of Birmingham, giving their support to help future talent at the university.

We are immensely grateful to these judges for taking time out of their busy schedules to meet with the founders and hear about their innovative business ideas. The judging panel consisted of:

Greg Freeman | Founder of Data Literacy Academy
Miruna Chipara | Creator Fund Investor Associate
Ravi Ranjan | Award winning entrepreneur and founder of Voilo
Zubeda Limbada |
Founder of Connect Future

The presence of these judges, with their diverse skills and backgrounds, ensured that the founders received comprehensive feedback, suggestions, and reflections on their pitches. Their collective expertise provided valuable insights for the participants to identify areas of improvement and refine their business concepts.

The Event and Winners:

During the competition, each founder had two minutes to present their pitch, followed by a five-minute Q&A session. The event placed the spotlight on the founders, offering them a platform to showcase their ideas and receive constructive feedback. Three outstanding winners emerged from the competition:

Dr. Aakash Rai - Meditask: Dr. Rai, Founder of Meditask, presented a digital platform connecting doctors with medical students in real-time. The platform facilitates clinical skills training and enables quick collaboration among doctors in hospital settings.

John Sewell - Cosimo.Art: John captivated the judges with Cosimo.Art, an innovative venture that merges technology and art to provide unique digital art experiences.

Louis Akaatenger - Maringo: Louis impressed the judges with Maringo, a start-up focusing on sustainable packaging solutions harnessing the power of emerging technologies including Web3 and Blockchain.

The panel of judges shared their insights and inspired the founders with their comments. Ravi Ranjan praised the diversity and quality of ideas presented, acknowledging the passion and dedication displayed by the participants. Greg Freeman highlighted the abundance of impressive spinouts from the University of Birmingham, while Zubeda Limbada commended the entrepreneurial minds in action.

Aakash Rai: I would like to thank the Elevate Team for giving me the opportunity to pitch to an expert panel and get their valuable feedback! I am honoured to be announced the winner of the competition and cannot wait to use the money to help with regulatory compliance. The next step for us is to implement within medical schools and NHS Hospitals so if anyone is interested, please do get in touch.

Ravi Ranjan: The event itself played a significant role in fostering an ecosystem of entrepreneurship and innovation. The supportive environment is instrumental in helping these aspiring entrepreneurs turn their visions into reality.

Looking Ahead, the UoB Elevate programme and The Exchange continue to be a hub for entrepreneurial growth and success. With the event marking a successful year for founders, the UoB Elevate team is now eagerly seeking the next cohort of talented entrepreneurs to join the program in September 2023.

University of Birmingham students and graduates with business development aspirations are encouraged to explore the support provided by B-Enterprising. Find out how you can apply by visiting the UoB Elevate website.
